BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The globe is rapidly becoming a global village, and telecommunication is an essential instrument in the process of communication. The current advancement in mobile phone communication in Nigeria has completely altered people's perspectives. Our society's educated elite, in particular, is particularly interested in adapting to new advances that will allow them to better exploit their potential. As a result, the society's elite are increasingly turning to mobile technology for study and other purposes. Etukudo (2019) Students are not the only ones who use mobile phones for studying. Regardless, mobile phones are utilised for exchanging ideas, money conversion, calculators, dictionaries, games, and communication with family members, friends, and well-wishers. Mobile phones are being used for a variety of purposes, including social networking.

Most metropolitan areas in Africa and throughout the world utilize mobile phones to transfer money from one financial institution to another on behalf of its customers. The advantages of a mobile phone cannot be measured. These mobile phones or handsets used to come with extra capabilities that let the owner to add more features to fit his or her needs. For example, these mobile phones have a mobile Bible and Quran, internet access via FaceBook, Yahoo, and Google, and the ability to record, save, and play music and movies. All of these features combine to make the mobile phone one of the most formidable learning tools. Phone Users may communicate with one another, capture some of life's great events, listen to music, install games, programmes, and movies, transfer data and files to other compatible devices, and access the internet (www). These are a few key characteristics of the most contemporary Smartphone, which make it (the Smartphone) faster and easier to learn and search the internet for academic resources. Its influence and applications may be both beneficial and detrimental, particularly in a university setting (Ofonime, 2019).

However, because the world's technologies are rapidly evolving, mobile phones have remained an essential tool for communication. The telecommunications business is rapidly evolving across the world, with one invention quickly replacing another. The telephone system, which is available in fixed wireless lines or mobile phone communication, is a significant advancement. Mobile phone handset technologies have dramatically boosted communication efficiency to the point where messages may be sent and received throughout the world and inside space with maximum speed and efficiency (Bittner 2019).

The Nigerian telecom sector entered a new era in 2001. The mobile phone was launched, and Nigerians quickly adopted it. The introduction of mobile phones was a good development in Nigeria, since the globe has become more globalised, with information technology playing a role. Nigeria has now entered the club of nations on the path to economic development connected with communication technology.

According to the National Communication Commission's (2012) study, around 90 million Nigerians have access to mobile phones. Without a doubt, this is a significant impetus in the telecommunications business.

According to the same survey, the proportion of mobile telecommunication customers in Nigeria is above 90%, demonstrating how much the population has adopted mobile phones as a tool for communication. Mobile phone communication has undoubtedly improved the lives of Nigerians since it allows for effective contact not just in cities but also in rural regions. Nigerian mobile phone customers may now use their phones to make voice conversations, send short messaging services (Texts), and other high-level services like as transmitting (sending) and receiving still and line images, and view live events from anywhere in the globe (Kazoh, 2008).

Many academics, presenters and writers like cook (2010), O’Dell (2009) have examined and determined that individuals utilise mobile phone to convey business, SMS and essential information. As a result, even educational institutions recognised the importance of mobile phone communication to knowledge. As a result, people utilise mobile phones to search for assignments, transmit messages such as fixed class, talk, and create new acquaintances. The usage of mobile phones has now permeated different groups in society and educational institutions. Farmers, market women, labourers, administrators, bankers, professors, lecturers, and students, to name a few, all utilise cell phones for various reasons. It is used to improve knowledge and learning in various disciplines. Regardless of its detrimental effects, the beneficial influence on knowledge is considered to stimulate development and learning across the nation and beyond the world as observed by Ofonime (2019). Even secondary school students now have access to a smartphone. These kids utilised it to make calls, play games, search for information, and socialise with one another. Nigerian university students, such as those at Kaduna State University, the University of Nigeria, and the University of Abuja, among others, utilise mobile phone handsets for a variety of purposes, one of which is to acquire knowledge for studying, which is their primary reason for being in school.
